The Corporate Materials Laboratory (CML) supports all of Worthington Industries’ business units and joint ventures by providing rapid technical problem solving, consulting, failure analysis, customer support, and leading research and development projects.  As a Materials Scientist, this role will coordinate a variety of projects by collecting background information, designing and directing effective laboratory tests, analyzing the results, and then delivering conclusions and recommendations in a timely manner.  The Materials Scientist is also expected to develop and perform advanced hands-on testing in the laboratory using a variety of analytical tools, heat treating equipment, and mechanical testing systems.  This job involves working with large numbers of people with varying skill sets and backgrounds; therefore, oral and written communication skills are critical.  The ability to understand customer needs, to tailor reports and presentations appropriately, and to deliver these results quickly and accurately are as critical as technical aptitude in this position.


Analyzing data and preparing professional reports for customers

Performing advanced laboratory testing

Meeting and discussing results with customers

Conducting literature reviews, keeping up on current literature, researching new technologies, and developing a network of external analytical labs.

Training, travel to Worthington facilities, conferences.

Leading safety improvements, developing new test methods, and creating new testing capabilities in the CML.

Practice and promote safety in all laboratory work.

Timely delivery of results to customers.

Effective oral and written communication with a variety of people to solve technical problems.

Solve complex problems using advanced materials characterization techniques.

Organize data into concise reports focused on business solutions.

Desired Experience

Bachelor of Science and a minimum of 3 years industrial experience or Master of Science with 2 years industrial experience.  Education/Experience to include: in Metallurgy, Welding

Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering or related discipline. 

Outstanding candidates with degrees in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, and Mechanical Engineering with 5+ years’ relevant experience may also be considered.

Knowledgeable and experienced in both ferrous, non-ferrous metallurgy, and materials joining.

Hands-on experience working in a metallurgical or materials laboratory setting.


Essential Skills:

Advanced knowledge of physical metallurgy and materials characterization techniques.

Experience with metallurgical processes: specifically sheet metal rolling, sheet metal coating, and sheet metal forming.

Knowledge of and experience with welding, brazing, soldering, and other joining techniques.

Ability to operate advanced microscopy, heat treating, and mechanical testing equipment.

Outstanding interpersonal and written communication skills.
