Engineering Project Manager - Automation & Robotics

The Engineering Project Manager role will be part of the Manufacturing Automation and Robotics team (MARS). This role will be responsible for partnering with business teams to develop automation solutions that prevent waste, reduce and eliminate safety hazards, and enable frontline employees to drive bottom-line impact by focusing on value-added activities.  The Engineering Project Manager will lead the project management for the team and also provide engineering or technical support (roughly 70/30 split).  They will be an active participant in selecting target value streams or production lines for MARS engagements, completing current state analyses of those value streams, and evaluating and prioritizing future state opportunities identified.  Project management responsibilities include initiation, planning, execution, and closure of projects.  This includes coordinating the efforts of the MARS team with the customer facility’s team, Worthington partners (from IT, Corp. Technology, Analytics, etc.), and third-party contractors or consultants, to deliver projects on plan.  The Project Manager will work with partners ranging from senior-level stakeholders to plant floor employees and should be capable of influencing across these levels.

**Corporate Headquarters is located in Columbus, OH but this role can be remote.  There will be travel involved and the current travel will entail traveling every other week to the West Warwick Rhode Island facility for several days and the following week will be remote/ home office-based. The preference is for the position to be in Columbus, OH but the team is open to full remote with the expectation of travel to RI every other week. 


  • Participate in initial discovery of opportunities and, with the Plant Engineering Manager, rapidly estimate potential returns.
  • Define and clarify project scope, goals, and deliverables. Identify and manage project dependencies and critical path.
  • Develop schedule, project timelines, and milestones using appropriate tools. Develop full-scale project plans and associated communication documents.
  • Determine project resources required and coordinate activities across organizational functions (local teams, IT, external partners, etc.)
  • Define project baselines and track project progress, milestones and deliverables. Develop and deliver progress reports, proposals, required documentation, and presentations.
  • Proactively manage changes in project scope. Determine and take corrective actions. Identify and resolve issues and conflicts within the project team.
  • Improve project management process, methods, and tools. Create/refine standard work for effective and efficient execution of projects.
  • Participate in the analysis of value stream current state, including helping to create/update value stream map and collecting detailed data on releveant processes.
  • Participate in development of a future state plan for the value stream, including identifying opportunities to automate processes that are unreliable, non-value added, or are safety hazards.
  • Provide technical/engineering support during automation solution development.  May include mechanical design, controls design, layout of processes and/or equipment, etc.

Desired Experience


  • Two or more years relevant experience in project management required.
  • Three or more years experience in manufacturing environment or similar required.
  • BS in engineering or significant relevant experience in machine design, controls, etc. required.
  • Ability and disposition to respectfully challenge status quo and influence without authority
  • Ability to travel
