Summary

The Lead Product Development Engineer is a critical technical leadership role; successful execution will bring new disruptive products to our markets, protect our core offerings, and empower strategic vision for top line growth. This strategic role resides within Worthington Industries’ growing Building Products portfolio and Innovation team. We’re breaking revenue records and looking for top tier engineering talent to respectfully challenge and push Innovation to the next level. 

This Lead New Product Development Engineer will set best NPD engineering practices, leading by example in executing high profile product development, and mentoring less experienced engineers. Emphasis is on traditional new product design cycles from cradle-to-grave and analytical methods to reduce risk while increasing agility. Current product platforms within this business unit include remote monitoring (see SmartLidTM); pressure vessels for: heating and cooking fuels, refrigerants, specialty chemicals and insulations, adhesives, and cannabis extraction. 

We are seeking an experienced, top-tier engineer excited to take technical ownership, looking to grow and thrives in fast paced, diverse, and entrepreneurial environments. 

Responsibilities

•    Lead engineering product design from cradle-to-grave for prioritized products 
•    Introduce best design practices and frameworks 
•    Provide engineering mentorship and bring best practices to mature our new product development process
•    Quickly iterate design concepts on 3D CAD for subsequent revision by Corp Engineering, external consultant or customer feedback
•    Work closely with Corporate and Plant Engineering to optimize design for manufacturability 
•    Lead and perform FEA for rapid design iterations; Outsource and manage simulation (FEA, CFD) when beyond team skillset or available resources
•    Facilitate and participate in D/PFMEAs and design reviews
•    Lead plastic part design of non-pressurized components and accessories; work with external polymer consultants and suppliers to refine design further, prototype and manufacture at scale   
•    Review and advise Corporate Engineering drawings 
•    Participate in Voice-of-Customer research, translating needs to product requirements while building customer empathy
•    Be a bridge and champion of cross collaboration among technical partners in Corporate Engineering, Corporate Quality, Plant Quality & Engineers, and Corporate Materials Lab
•    Develop prototypes for customer insights testing
•    Lead performance and reliability testing with internal and external facilities  

 

Desired Experience

Desired Experience: 

  • 5 – 10 years of engineering experience
  • 3+ years of new product development experience 
  • Bachelor or Masters degree in ABET accredited mechanical, material science, industrial or similar engineering program
  • Project management experience preferred

  • Strong mechanical and manufacturing technical foundation 
  • Experienced in new product design from cradle-to-grave
  • Proficient in a 3D CAD package for quick design iterations
  • Strong desire to innovate and own delivery of project outcomes
  • Excited to work in fast paced, dynamic, entrepreneurial environment  
  • Strong communication skills; comfortable and effective in presenting and distilling complex technical topics to the business; Respectfully challenges and confident in voicing opinion
  • Highly collaborative and able to quickly build trust across multiple disciplines including design, voice of customer, quality, procurement, supply chain and project management
  • Comfortable working in ambiguity;Self motivated and team player mentality  
  • Business Acumen - Identifies cost and risks at the component and sub-assembly level to meet defined cost targets

 

Preferred Experience:

  • (preferred) Proficient in static loading, small deflection Finite Element Analysis and other simulation techniques to improve product performance and decrease overall schedule risk
  • (preferred) Experience designing plastic parts for common plastic manufacturing methods (eg injection molding, blow molding, rotoforming, etc) 
  • (preferred) Experience designing sheet metal, cast and machined parts
  • (preferred) Demonstrated track record of project leadership from concept to launch of large cross-functional teams 
  • (preferred) Familiarity with codes and regulations such as CFR 49, ASME BVP, NFPA 58, ATEX, and International Protection for dust and water ingress
  • (preferred) Design for Six-Sigma (DFSS) green belt certification or higher
