Material Science Engineering Intern

This position primarily supports the Worthington Cylinders Division Metallurgist position.  This is a great position to get exposure to a variety of materials used for cylinder manufacturing.  The position will be very hands on and deal with Worthington Industries laboratories.  The position will also have some interaction with Worthington Cylinders material suppliers.


The skills listed below are not fully required, but would need to be developed within the position.

Needed Skills

  • Sophomore level or above
  • Computer:  MS Office (Excel, Word), Minitab
  • Familiar with statistics
  • Familiar with measurement tools (micrometer, calipers, etc.)
  • Awareness of material testing (mechanical properties, microstructure, etc.)
  • Process oriented

  • Interpersonal skills


  • Assist in development of new material grades used for cylinder applications
  • Submission of material samples for lab testing, and analysis of results
  • Input of test data into MS Excel
  • Data analysis using statistics (regression, correlation, t-test, etc.)
  • Involvement on material supplier trials
  • Assist in documentation of data analysis for steel trials and technical projects
  • Documentation of quality characteristics of various steel suppliers
  • Occasional material supplier visits
